Some information shared recently may have caused confusion about the capital projects currently under consideration in our community and their supposed link to a tax increase. The municipal administration wishes to clarify the situation and provide accurate and complete information.
The proposed projects—including the purchase of fire trucks, the construction of two fire stations, municipal offices, community spaces, and the development of parking at the arena—do not automatically mean a tax increase. The $21.9 million amount mentioned publicly represents a borrowing authorization request submitted to the province, not an actual loan.
A borrowing authorization request is an administrative step that allows the municipality to obtain, if necessary, permission to borrow up to a certain amount to finance future projects. However, this does not constitute a firm commitment. This authorization does not guarantee that all projects will be carried out, nor that the entire amount will be borrowed.
An actual loan will only be taken out if the projects are confirmed, the needs are clearly established, the available subsidies have been taken into account, and the repayment capacity has been carefully analyzed. Each decision on this matter will be subject to a rigorous process, as is appropriate in responsible municipal governance.
In addition, several upcoming projects could benefit from government grants totaling up to $4.5 million, which would significantly reduce the need to borrow.
We would like to reaffirm our commitment to transparent, rigorous, and responsible management of municipal finances. Our priority remains to provide you with accurate information based on facts. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact us. The dialogue remains open.
