Controlling dogs
The Rural Community of Beausoleil has adopted By-law No. 2025-03 respecting dog control, which sets out the rules all dog owners must follow within our municipality.
Owner Responsibilities
All dog owners must:
- Ensure their dog wears identification bearing the owner's phone number and the dog's name
- Keep their dog on a leash at all times in public places
- Not allow their dog to run at large
- Immediately pick up their dog's fecal matter on any property other than their own and dispose of it according to the Southeast Eco360 sorting guide
- Not allow their dog to bark excessively (continuously for more than 20 minutes)
- Not allow their dog to attempt to bite, harass, chase, or attack a person or animal
Rabies Vaccination
All dogs must be vaccinated against rabies starting at four (4) months of age, and revaccinated according to the schedule prescribed by a veterinarian. Owners must be able to provide a valid rabies vaccination certificate upon request by the municipality. If a medical reason prevents vaccination, a certificate from a veterinarian is required.
Dog Bites
Any bite must be reported. The by-law enforcement officer will conduct an investigation, and the dog must be quarantined at the owner's home for ten (10) days.
Dangerous Dogs
A dog may be classified as dangerous if it has bitten, attacked, or aggressively harassed a person or animal, or if it displays threatening behaviour. Specific conditions then apply: mandatory muzzle off the owner's property, maximum one-metre leash, secure enclosure on the property, and warning signage.
Infractions and Penalties
Any violation of the by-law may result in an administrative penalty of $140 or, if prosecuted, a fine ranging from $140 to $640.
